ICT Overview

ICT Industry in Northern Ireland

The ICT (information & communications technology) industry in Northern Ireland is on the move. Everybody knows that the industry worldwide suffered a correction shortly after 2000 - not everyone knows that the industry has bounced back and that Northern Ireland's ICT industry now employs more people than it ever has before. Over the past couple of years, employment in the industry has been growing by 14% per annum, and indications are that this is set to rise further.

Northern Ireland continues to punch well above its weight in attracting inward investment from international companies in the face of ever increasing competition from other regions, as demonstrated by the recent investments by Citigroup and Polaris in establishing software development centres in Belfast. Indigenous industry is also prospering, fuelled by the growing number of companies successfully targeting markets outside Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland technology companies are at the heart of almost everything we do in our daily lives. If you send a text, use the internet on your mobile phone, watch DVDs or press the interactive button on your TV chances are you will be using technology developed locally.

Technology pervades all activities from banking to leisure, farming to retail, sports to industry and Northern Ireland companies provide software to support all of these activities, and almost all of the companies in the sector operate globally so you will be working with developers and customers from all over the world.
